Urgent call for winter woollies to keep communities safe and warm.

As the bitter cold sets in this winter, thousands of families across Victoria will struggle to stay warm as cost-of-living pressures puts strain on their household budgets and wellbeing.

“Every week we see at least 5 to 10 new clients who are struggling to make ends meet,” says Uniting’s Emergency Relief Coordinator in Wodonga, Catherine.

“Rising rental costs have placed many of our clients at risk of losing their housing. A significant portion of their income is consumed by rent, leaving very little for everyday living expenses, including food and utilities.

“As a result, many are unable to adequately heat their homes. The fear of “bill shock” and accumulating energy debt means they often avoid turning on heaters altogether, even during the coldest periods, further impacting their health and wellbeing.”

For many, Uniting’s Winter Blanket Appeal has become an important lifeline of support.

“The Winter Blanket Appeal supports hundreds of people in need, especially those affected by rising energy costs who are unable to adequately heat their homes,” says Catherine.

“Many of our clients live in housing with limited insulation, minimal window coverings and inadequate heating, making it difficult to stay warm during the colder months.

Access to warm blankets makes a significant difference.”

Catherine says up to 400 people each winter request blankets and winter woollies, from aged pensioners and families, to those fleeing family violence and experiencing homelessness.

“The demand for our services continues to increase,” she says. “Every day, we dig  deeper to provide urgent support when people need it most.”

Catherine highlights that even a single donation can provide vital, immediate support to someone in need.

“Your kind thought for others can help ensure that individuals and families who struggle to stay warm and sheltered will receive the basics they needed to get through a difficult time,” she says.

“For people struggling to make ends meet, on the edge of homelessness, experiencing family violence or recovering from the impact of alcohol and other drugs, the right help at the right time makes all the difference.”
