How a basketball session helped one young boy take a big step toward his dreams.

As a Community Connector for Uniting Wimmera’s Family Preservation and Reunification (FPR) program, Laura Bailey is passionate about helping families build confidence, develop new skills and connect with their local community.

Recently, Laura organised a basketball event designed to give families a safe and welcoming space to try something new, meet others and experience what’s available in the community. Held at The Station, a Horsham Rural City Council facility with a fantastic indoor court and BBQ area, the event was all about promoting inclusion, confidence and community connection.

Laura partnered with Benbow Basketball Academy, chosen for its strong reputation in offering children a safe, supportive and fun environment to learn basketball. Their gentle, individualised coaching approach ensures every child feels supported, regardless of their starting point.

With the help of funding, children who attended received their own basketball packs – including runners, jerseys, shorts, socks, basketballs and training bags – to help them feel part of something meaningful.

The morning was spent learning new basketball skills in a positive and encouraging environment, followed by a shared lunch that fostered further connection between families.

Among the children who attended was Christian, a 12-year-old boy who described sport as his “happy place.” From the moment he stepped onto the court, his natural ability was clear. The Benbow coaches were so impressed with his talent and determination that they approached Laura to discuss inviting Christian to join their ongoing weekly academy.

When Laura shared the opportunity with Christian, he was overjoyed, and his mum was equally excited and supportive. Working together with Benbow, Laura was able to help Christian enrol in the academy, giving him an ongoing activity that not only supports his dream of becoming a professional athlete but also helps him build friendships and confidence in a community setting.

For Laura, this experience highlights what her role as a Community Connector is all about: breaking down barriers, opening doors, and helping families feel empowered to engage with their community.

“It’s about giving families the confidence to step into community spaces, try something new and see what’s possible,” Laura said. “Seeing Christian now part of the Benbow Academy, working towards his goals, shows just how impactful these connections can be.”

Benbow Head Coach Scotty shares a similar passion for creating safe, supportive spaces for young athletes.

“Watching a young person grow – not just in their basketball skills but in their confidence and belief in themselves – is the best part of what we do,” Scotty said.

This is a story of how one simple event can lead to big opportunities and how community, when it comes together, can help young people thrive.
