Carol finds new purpose through op shop volunteering.

Volunteering at the Keilor Park Uniting Op Shop has done more than just fill Carol’s week. It has helped her meet new people and rediscover a sense of purpose.

Since joining the team in May last year, after leaving a long-term career, she has become a valued and familiar face, building her skills while connecting with the community she calls home.

“The shop’s local, and I liked the retail side of things,” Carol says. “I thought it would be a great way to try something new and stay active.”

Carol quickly found herself part of an inclusive close-knit team.

“We’re a small group, but we’ve gotten to know each other really well. There’s a strong sense of teamwork, and the shop is run so well. I’ve learned a lot.”

A typical shift sees Carol sorting donations, pricing stock, and helping customers on the shop floor.

“It’s eye-opening to see how much we consume. So much comes through the doors, and it feels good to help give items a new life.”

Volunteering hasn’t just kept Carol busy. It has also helped her become more confident when meeting new people.

“I’ve really opened up. I’m much more at ease approaching customers now. I love volunteering. It keeps me active and keeps boredom at bay. I always look forward to seeing what I might have missed.”

The skills Carol uses in the shop remind her of her former work in logistics. But now there’s a warm, community feel, and a few surprises along the way.

“One day I found a Mario Kart remote control toy that I picked up for my grandson. And sometimes we get brand-new items with the original price tags still on. Some are worth hundreds of dollars, and we sell them for a fraction of the price. What a bargain!”

Carol says customers often share their appreciation.

“We get a lot of regulars, and they often tell us how fantastic the shop is. It’s lovely to hear, and it makes you feel proud to be part of it.”

What started as a way to stay engaged has become something far more meaningful.

“I feel proud of myself. I’m giving back to the community and supporting Uniting to help people doing it tough.”

Her advice to anyone thinking about volunteering?

“Give it a go. You never know what you’ll learn, who you’ll meet or how good it’ll make you feel.”
