The Bestie Test
We love your donations but can only use items that would be good enough for you to give to a friend.
Suitable and sellable items are:
- In good condition
- Not damaged or broken
- Clean and usable
- Inside, not outside. Brought into a shop, or placed in a donation bin
- Something you would consider giving to a friend.
Please donate responsibly. Don’t leave donations outside our shops as these can be damaged by the weather or other people.
What we cannot accept
We love your donations and it’s hard to say “no, thank you”.
Sometimes we need to refuse donated items to meet our legal obligations. Other times, we may decline your pre-loved items as it would cost more to transport, repair or refurbish the item than we can sell it for.
Items that can’t be sold cost us money to dispose, financially impacting on Uniting’s vital community services.
We are unable to accept the following items:
- Dirty, stained, damaged or broken clothing and goods
- Used beauty and hygiene products
- Analogue TVs and computer equipment (monitors, printers, scanners)
- White goods (including fridges, washing machines and microwaves)
- Mattresses, beds and bases
- Beanbags and pillows
- Office equipment including chairs and filing cabinets
- Encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines and old library books
- Excess kids toys
- Furniture over 2 metres wide or 2 metres high (eg. wall units)
- Baby furniture (car seats, highchairs, prams, cots etc)
- Outdoor items (such as BBQs)
- Harmful products (including knives, weapons, and gas canisters)
- Building materials, underlay and carpets
- Gas cylinders and appliances
- Outdoor playground equipment (swing sets, trampolines)
- Curtains, blinds, awnings and curtain rods
- Coat hangers.

Host a donation station
Make your school or workplace a donation hub. Let us bring a donation bin to you. Sometimes it can be hard to clear out your wardrobe. A donation drive or challenge with your colleagues can make it not only easier, but fun.
We will bring a donation bin to your workplace and set it up in a common area. Once your team have filled it up, give us a call and we’ll come and collect it. It’s that simple.
To request a donation station for your workplace, contact us.
What effect does my donation have?
As well as helping to save the planet, divert items from landfill and contribute to the circular economy, donating items to Uniting Op Shops helps fund vital programs such as Emergency Relief and Community Meals.
In fact, every time you choose to donate your items to an op shop, you contribute to the almost $1 billion that Australian op shops raise for community programs across the country.
